Sherwood Rose

This blog posting is just so much fun that I decided to do another post! This one is a little bit more about who I am and what I'm about.
I chose my online name because, first, my mother calls me Rose on HER blog. Why? Well, it seems that she thinks I'm like a rose in that I'm sensitive, quiet and gentle, with an unexpected strength, firmness of purpose and resilience. So much for the rose part.
How about Sherwood? Well...I'm not quite a tame rose in a sedate cultivated garden. I'm a hybrid between a lovely tame rose and a free wild rose blooming in the foliage of Robin Hood's hideout, Sherwood Forest.
The tame, sedate part of me loves the gentle cottage garden life. This part helps to explain why I NEVER want to get out of bed. Ever.
In contrast, the Sherwood Forest/Maid Marion part of the name sometimes overcomes my love of domestic delights (i.e. sleep, reading, eating, reading some more, sleep) and drags me off on adventures, for which I'm usually grateful once the adventure is in full swing or over. Unfortunately, these adventures tend to overlap each other so that I don't have much breathing time before the next one comes my way. So my full name is Rose of Sherwood, comfort-loving adventurer, lover of forest green and petal pink, and (for this is where all those adventures got me) Defender of Truth, Goodness and Beauty.

From Sherwood Forest

This is one of those peaceful nights I love. I'm technically with my family (even though half of them are asleep and my mom is probably looking at her favorite knitting sites), I'm in my beautiful pale green room with the two windows that look out on quiet pastoral (well, suburban) scenes, and my Great Books diploma is on the familyroom mantelpiece whereon my mother (I'm assuming) bestowed it three weeks ago when we came back home from my graduation.

These last four years have changed me - I think. Studying the Great Books - thinking about so many of the ideas that have changed Western civilization through the last three thousand years - probably changes any one who dedicates four years to such an endeavor. I'm a lot better at thinking logically than I was four years ago. (Though Kitty, my younger but taller sister, would tell you that that's not saying much). And I see so much of what I didn't even know I didn't know back then, about the world in general. I see that there's just so many wonderful, wise things out in the world.

But one heart-deep desire within me has not changed. I want to write, I want to write, I want to write. No amount of notebooks filled with my writings ever seems to sate that desire.
So...here's the deal.

I write the blog.

You read the blog.

Beautiful symbiotic relationship.

I want to try this keep-your-diary-for-everyone-to-see thing for this summer, and see how it goes. Then I might take a sabbatical for autumn and winter and spring and the rest of my life. But then again I might just not shut up. Either way, let's try it out and see what happens!
